The Journey - Juneteenth, Secondary Applications, and More!

Hi, Reader, welcome to the June installment of The Journey: A Melanin.in.Med Newsletter. In this newsletter, I share my latest freebie, how I spent the Juneteenth holiday, and my tips for secondary applications.

My Month:

Happy June! It has been a while since the last newsletter. I have been hard at work in my clerkship year. I finished up 10 weeks of Internal Medicine then celebrated with an AMAZING vacation with my sister to Cancun.

I have been back in NYC for about three weeks. Since then, I have started my Pediatrics rotation. I spent one week on outpatient, where I did specialty clinics including endocrinology and adolescent medicine, and a week in the newborn nursery. Then, I spent one week inpatient at Bellevue Hospital, our public, safety net hospital. For the next week and a half, I will be commuting to Brooklyn, a hospital I have not spent much time at. However, I am looking forward to it.

I don't think pediatrics can convince me not to do family medicine, but I sure do love the kiddos!

Secondary Application Tips

Secondary applications have already begun to roll out for TMDSAS and AACOMAS. By the end of this week, they will be rolling out for AMCAS. I just posted a new video on YouTube that covers my secondary application essays for the "Why X School", "Diversity", and "COVID-19" prompts. These were the essays that helped me land a FULL TUITION scholarship!

Juneteenth

Juneteenth recognizes the emancipation of enslaved individuals in the US. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was signed before, June 19th, 1985, represents the day when it went to effect throughout the country.

​

This is a time dedicated to celebrating our freedom and history. I spent it at the Broadway Celebrates Juneteenth outdoor concert. Initially, I didn't think I would be able to observe the holiday. My medical school does not recognize the holiday; therefore, I was scheduled to work. Our administration also did not consider it to fall under one of our categories for approved absence requests. Thankfully, I am on a flexible rotation, so I was able to make up the missed time. Hopefully, in the future, my medical school will recognize and observe the holiday!
